School programmes on career guidance
In addition to the above, discussions with officials of the Department of Manpower and Employment (DoME), Ministry of Labour, discussions with officials of the National Institute of Education (NIE), and collaborated with them. Details of individual events were as follows:
A series of school workshops on Career counselling were held in five districts (Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Galle). These programmes primarily focused school students, followed by school teachers and principals.
Career guidance officers of the Department of Manpower and Employment collaborated in many of these programmes as resource persons.
Programmes for School Children - Programmes focused on providing career guidance information to school children to make informed decisions prior to GCE (Ordinary Level) stage. Emphasis was placed on facilitating students’ selection of optional subjects in Grade 10 along with their career interests.
Accordingly, following six workshops were conducted in schools.
Gampaha District: The workshop on career guidance for school children in Gampaha District was conducted in Minuwangoda Nalanda Boys’ School on 22nd of June, 2017. Two hundred and twenty students from Grade 9 participated to the workshop. Ms Kumudu Sumedha organized the programme with the collaboration of DoME.
Kandy District: The workshop was held on 6th July in Thennekumbura Maha Vidyalaya, Kandy for the grade 9 students. About 50 students participated in the programme. Dr Chandana Jayawardena organized the programme with the collaboration of DoME.
Nuwara Eliya District: Workshop was conducted on 7th July, 2017 at St. Xaviers College, Nuwara Eliya for grade 9 and 10 students. About 150 students participated in the programme, which was conducted by Ms Savithri Mudannayake of Sri Lanka Army. Dr Chandana Jayawardena organized the programme.

Colombo District: Two workshops were conducted at the President’s college, Maharagama on 18th of September, 2017. Grade 11 students and grade 12/13 students participated in the programme. Ms Enoka Randeniya organized the programme with the collaboration of DoME.
Workshop on career guidance for school teachers was held on 17th and 18th May, 2017 at Katunayaka Central Collage, with the participation of 52 teachers engaged in career counselling in schools at Gampaha District. This programme was conducted by the DoME with the coordination of Ms Kumudu Sumedha. A workshop on the “Importance of Career Guidance at School Level” was held at the Nuwaraeliya zonal office for the principals in NuwaraEliya education zone on July 07, 2017. Workshop was conducted by Dr Chandana Jayawardena with the participation of 45 school principals.
